For Immediate Release:

New York, NY (June 4, 2007 www.blackcatholicsforlife.org The National Black Catholic Apostolate for Life announced today the fifth annual “June is Abortion and All Acts of Violence Month 2007, in the African American community.  “Our theme this year is: Let’s Go and Tell the Neighborhood that all life is sacred from conception to the natural end,” stated Franciscan Father Jim Goode, President.

The culture of death is affecting our community in a devastating way and these facts must be told.  Then we must move from the telling to the changing. There have been over 15 million African American babies aborted since Roe v. Wade.    U.S. Crime Watch reports that 1,000 crimes involving firearms are committed every day.  A greater proportion of these are crimes have occurred in the African American Community.  Every day in the United States eight children alone die from a gun wound.

Therefore, the National Black Catholic Apostolate for Life is declaring that June is Abortion and All Acts of Violence Awareness Month.  “Abortion and the deadly acts of violence have taken a serious toll on our families and neighborhoods. We are praying that we can turn this crisis around by going into our neighborhoods and praying, proclaiming, and advocating the dignity of all life,” stated Monsignor Maurico West, Vicar General of the Diocese of Charlotte and member of NBCAL Board of Consultants.

Other Lead Coordinators of the June Awareness Month include: Sr. Barbara Spears, SNJM, Vice President – National Black Sisters’ Conference, Ms. Martha Carter-Bailey, Director of African American Ministry, Diocese of Raleigh, and Mr. Michael Youngblood, National Black Catholic Youth Network.
